6 Piece Bathroom Accessory Set

Everyone I knew growing up used Craftsman tools. That's probably because it's what their parents used, and it makes sense to put your trust in the tools you've watched others have good luck with. Unfortunately, if you're in my age group you didn't have the opportunity to invest in a brand-new, made in the United States tool set from Craftsman.

Still, you've stuck by the brand because the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. Besides, even if Craftsman quality isn't what it once was, it's good enough to tackle the kind of work we do on our own cars. Right?

Knowing the issues many folks have with modern Craftsman tools, it was exciting to hear that the brand was being handed over to Stanley Black and Decker. Stanely promised to restore the brand to its former glory. To the DIY crowd, the idea of having access again to high-quality tools without going broke was good news. Is that what we got out of the deal?

Some time has passed since then, and it looks for the most part to be more of the same for the Craftsman line. Take this Craftsman 40-piece tool set, for example. There's an updated ratchet design with engraved sockets, and even the case seems to be a lot better than what we grew up with. We know it's not fair to take these updates at face value, which is why The Drive is putting this set to the test. We want to know if it's any better than what we've had to work with and if it's good enough to get Craftsman out of the shadow of its former self.

Unboxing the Craftsman 40-Piece Set

Opening up the Craftsman tool set was nothing short of refreshing. I won't say it's miles apart from anything in its price range, but Craftsman took the time to help its customers feel like they are getting a better product.

The first thing I noticed is the quality of the blow-molded case. Sure, it's still a hard-plastic case, but it feels a lot more robust than what I've handled from the brand in the past. I don't suspect the latches will break easily, and it holds all of the tools firmly in place. I'd even say that it almost has too good of a grip on the sockets; pulling them free is a decent workout. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but they aren't likely to come flying out due to a minor bump.

A close up of Craftsman 40-Piece Mechanic's Tool Set

Hank O'Hop

You might not be able to tell, but those sockets are held in there better than you'd believe.

Speaking of sockets, it's good to see that Craftsman didn't get on board with laser-etched descriptors. Not only does each socket still feature its size engraved onto it, but the font is much larger and more legible than the smaller print we've dealt with for years.

A close up of Craftsman's large size stamps.

Hank O'Hop

Craftsman stamps large descriptors in every socket. As far as I'm concerned, this is way better than cheap laser etching that's bound to strip away.

This is only a 40-piece set built around the 3/8-inch ratchet, yet you still get a decent selection of metric and SAE sockets. I'd say pairing this kit with some combination wrenches and a 13/16 spark-plug socket would give a person the means to tackle a solid range of general tasks under the hood.

I'll admit that I was skeptical of the ratchet. After all, it's not the 36-tooth Craftsman ratchet I'm used to. This new ratchet has double the teeth, smooth edges, and a high-polish finish that feel almost alien to the brand — in a good way.

Still, I wasn't sure if I liked the ratchet in my hand all that much. I know that just holding tools isn't a real way to feel them out, though. So, I set out to find a project to tackle.

Getting After It With the Craftsman Tool Set

  • Good: Feels excellent in the hand, high-tooth count, legible markings, killer case.
  • Bad: Questionable internals, easy to accidentally switch directions, 12-point sockets tend to slip.
  • Check Latest Price

I've had Craftsman ratchets skip teeth and send my knuckles into plenty of sharp objects before, but I never hesitated to pick up the tools and get to work. It's not like I really had a choice. The job still needed to be done, no matter what tools I have at my disposal. I didn't want to treat this set any differently. My project Charger needed new shocks on all four corners, so that's what this Craftsman set would be used for.

Since this is a 40-piece set with only one ratchet and no wrenches, I'd need to bring along some additional hand tools to tackle the mounting bolts on the shocks. I won't take points off because of that. This is a relatively small set, and Craftsman does offer larger mechanic's tool sets for anyone in search of a more inclusive collection.

Overall, the experience was good. Scratch that. These blew me away. Maybe I just wanted to find something good about the new Craftsman, but that ratchet felt amazing to use, far better than anything else I've used from the brand in some time.

Craftsman doesn't follow in the same footsteps as other tool manufacturers by offering ratchets with round grips. It stuck with the rectangular theme we're all familiar with but modernized the design with rounded edges. This simple update makes a major difference. The ratchet felt natural in my hand, and I experienced zero discomfort throughout the entirety of the project.

I won't say it's perfect, however. While nothing broke, I did experience some small hiccups during use. I did accidentally bump the direction-selector switch enough times to get me cursing, and I had a 12-point socket slip off the hardware more than once. A little mindfulness about your form should help you avoid those issues.

The warm and fuzzy feelings of believing Craftsman moved up a tier or two in the tool world ended, though, when I took a look inside the ratchet. A little online searching led me to discover that the Craftsman ratchet might share internals with some Stanley ratchets I'm not ecstatic about. Opening up the ratchet and comparing it side by side with a Stanley model confirmed that they were the same.

A look at Craftsman's slim, but comfortable ratchet handle

Hank O'Hop

The more I use ratchets with this flat profile, the more I fall in love with it. I find it's a far better fit in my hand than the typical round handles found on ratchets.

What's Good About Craftsman's Set

I'm a huge fan of the way this tool feels in my hand. It might not have the most aesthetically pleasing design, but it fits my hand more naturally than any other ratchet I've used. That level of comfort might be enough for me to forgive it for the sins I'll discuss in a moment.

On top of feeling good, the ratchet and sockets did perform well. Changing shocks is a fairly harmless job, but some of my hardware was gummed up enough to require some serious torque to remove them. Despite that, there were no real performance or durability issues.

That 72-tooth mechanism did make a big difference when dealing with the shock mounts tucked into some tight spaces on this car. Seventy-two teeth is pretty standard for today's sockets, and since my old Craftsman ratchets feature just 36 teeth, the change is a huge improvement.

I've been able recently to put quite a few ratchet and socket sets to the test. The tools themselves hardly pose an issue; it's the cases that drive me up a wall. The fact that Craftsman's case is above average is refreshing.

I won't rave too much about it because it is still a blow-molded plastic case. But it is far more robust than what most budget-friendly sets come with. This has nothing to do with the tools themselves, but it is something I think other manufacturers can learn from.

A side by side of Stanley and Craftsman

Hank O'Hop

As you can see Stanley's black chrome ratchets and this Craftsman's are identical. Though it makes sense from a production standpoint, I can't say that I'm in love with it.

What's Not Great About the Craftsman 40-Piece Set

The Craftsman set isn't perfect, and I did run into a few issues while working. The direction-selector switch isn't recessed or protected by raised sections on the back of the ratchet. It's somewhat pronounced, and I accidentally bumped it and switched directions more than once. That's not a major deal, but it was annoying.

I also had the deep-well 12-point sockets slip off a few bits of hardware. Socket design isn't the only thing that can cause this, but it happened more than once.

Those two issues are easily avoidable with some careful application, but what really bothers me is what's inside. Taking a look at the inner workings of a Craftsman 72-tooth ratchet, I found that it relies on a single pawl that's pressed into place with a thin piece of metal. That flimsy piece is likely to slide out of place and jam the works. Stanley Black and Decker ratchets have that same design. In fact, the internals of this 3/8-inch ratchet are interchangeable with the Stanley black-chrome ratchet.

I'm getting to be less critical of this design as I use the ratchet more, but I can't understand why Stanley doesn't use a more robust piece of material to boost the reliability of this design.

Our Verdict on Craftsman's Mechanic's Tool Set

This is a step in the right direction for Craftsman. The brand seems to be making an effort to update its line to meet modern standards. Craftsman got a lot of things right, and this set will make a difference in your working experience. It's a great addition to any DIYer's collection.

I can't say it's the greatest set to put your money towards, however. Even if I have more confidence in the internals after using it more often, I won't say it's something I'd recommend for heavy-duty work. But the Craftsman's lifetime warranty makes it easy to live with the potential issues I've discussed.

FAQs About Craftsman

You've got questions. The Drive has answers.

Q. Do Craftsman tools still have a lifetime warranty?

A. Yes, they do. Instead of having Sears swap tools for you, Lowe's is now in charge. Thankfully, the process of doing so is exactly the same, and lifetime Craftsman tool owners don't need to jump through hoops to have their warranties honored.

Q. Where are Craftsman tools made now?

A. Craftsman has been expanding its production of U.S.-made tools, but plenty are still made overseas. This particular set is made in Taiwan, and I suspect many of its hand tools are of similar origin.

Q. Is Craftsman a good brand?

A. Yes, it is. Despite not being as good as it once was, there's no arguing that it's a leader of the pack as a manufacturer of tools suited to the DIY crowd. The balance of pricing, selection, and quality make it a tough brand to beat in this segment.

Sherwin Williams Peppercorn Bathroom

Sherwin Williams Peppercorn Bathroom

It's that time of year again. Our favourite paint companies start releasing the colour of the year for their brand and predict which colours will be most popular in the upcoming year.

Today we're talking about Sherwin-Williams' 2022 Colour of the Year and how you can use it in your home.

I have to admit, I was super excited when I found out the Evergreen Fog was the colour of the year for 2022.   First, because I LOVE incorporating green in a space whether it's by adding plants and florals to bring a space life or through paint and decor to create a relaxed, calming vibe.

Evergreen Fog is a beautiful, muted, neutral green that is soothing and a perfect choice whether you're creating a casual or sophisticated ambience for your space. In a time when we're spending so much time indoors, Evergreen Fog brings the outdoors into your home interior creating a connection with nature while embracing renewal and a longing for positive change.

Here are four different designer perspective's on how to incorporate Sherwin Williams' Colour of the Year 2022 into your home.

As I mentioned,
I love incorporating green in a space whether it's by adding plants to bring a space life or through paint or inspiration for furniture and decor. The colour scheme I 've chosen consists of a bright, true white as the base for trim, doors and cabinetry.  High Reflective White is my favourite white by Sherwin Williams as it always provides a beautifully clean contrast to whichever other paint colours I pair with it.

While Evergreen Fog can be used in virtually any space of your home, I've chosen to use it in the home office because it helps relax, de-stress and revitalize a person's psyche.

To coordinate with the 2022 colour of the year, I've used White Duck in the main spaces.  White Duck is an off-white paint colour with warm grey undertones.  It pairs well with the other colours I've chosen while adding modernism to a space.

Next, I've chosen Silverpointe for the master bedroom and ensuite.  Silverpointe is a subtle blue-green paint colour that is peaceful and calming - perfect for a bedroom.

And lastly, Iron Ore.  Iron Ore is a gorgeous black paint colour that is rich and impactful, but not as intense as other black paint colours.  It's a great option for cabinetry (as I'm using it for a kitchen island), a moody wall colour or as an inspiration reference for furniture and decor.

This is just one way to incorporate Sherwin Williams Colour of the Year 2022 into your home.  Check out how the rest of the team at Orangetree Interiors uses Evergreen Fog as their interior design inspiration below.

"I created this colour scheme around the 2022 SW Colour of the Year, Evergreen Fog. I am usually drawn to neutrals such as white, black, and grey in terms of paint colours so I wanted to create a home paint colour scheme where Evergreen Fog, a darker green with grey undertones, could be used but still align with my neutral design style.

I chose Pure White for the trim, doors and ceiling and Spare White for the main walls. I like a white base; it's clean, crisp and is a great backdrop for fun pops of colour through art,  furniture and decor.

For the master bedroom I chose Conservative Gray. It's still a neutral colour, but adds a bit of coziness for this restful space.

I think Evergreen Fog is a really pretty green. I love that it's understated and natural, making it feel more like a neutral. I would use this paint colour for an accent wall, a cabinet colour or as a beautiful front door colour.

A black accent wall can be so dramatic and Black of Night is a classic black that can really make a statement. I would love to use this paint colour on an accent wall with contemporary millwork for a cool, modern vibe."

"With the new release of Sherwin Williams' Colour of the Year 2022, Evergreen Fog, I decided to create a neutral colour palette that suits my neutral, rustic contemporary interior design style with hints of Mediterranean influence. Although I usually tend to gravitate towards neutral browns, whites, creams and blacks, Evergreen Fog is a perfect green paint colour that is muted and modern. In certain lighting this colour looks nearly grey and is a great choice for a sophisticated home with character.

For trim, doors and ceilings I would use Extra White by Sherwin Williams and would couple it with Spare White for walls. These two colours paired together create a clean, neutral canvas for the other colours to take center stage.

Evergreen Fog is a great accent colour for millwork used throughout or selectively in a home in areas such as the mudroom, laundry room, bathroom or a feature wall in a bedroom. When used intentionally throughout a home through decor or other accents, this colour creates a natural vibe with depth and dimension.

Another paint colour that adds personality to a space is Gauntlet Gray. It too would look amazing on millwork to create a dramatic impact, but I've chosen to use it in a powder room for a moody feel.

Finally, I've chosen Peppercorn as my final accent colour to use throughout an interior space. Since I am drawn to contemporary styles with rustic and Mediterranean influences , having a dark charcoal colour for contrast is an amazing way to finish a space. Peppercorn would look great as an island colour paired with light countertops if I have my choice!"

"The colour green is very much associated with nature which evokes the feeling of calmness, peacefulness and growth. Sherwin Williams' 2022 colour of the year does exactly that.  Studies show that the colour green helps us become more motivated and creative, therefore, I would use this paint colour in the office or playroom of a home.

The paint colour "Opaline" is a soft neutral colour with a subtle green undertone. Due to green's association with nature and its calming effects, I would use this paint colour in a master bedroom or in a living room depending on the vibe you want to create .

The next paint colour that I chose is Pure White. This white paint colour is a true classic. It is not overpowering which is great for highlighting pops of colours around the home. I would use this paint colour in a kitchen or dining room.

The last two colours I chose for this home paint colour scheme are Artisan Tan and Urbane Bronze. These darker, bolder colours are a great way to incorporate accents throughout a home. I'd use these colours on an accent wall, in built-ins or cabinetry or even pieces of furniture and decor that have similar tones."

As you can see Evergreen Fog is an extremely versatile paint colour.  It's calming, sophisticated and comforting all rolled into one, while bringing optimism for a new, better life to come.  It's no wonder Sherwin Williams chose it as their 2022 Colour of the year.  It truly is a perfect choice.

We hope you've been inspired by our ideas and put Evergreen Fog to use in your home. Make sure you stay tuned for next weeks giveaway.....We have news to share!

French Country Bathroom Ideas

French Country Bathroom Ideas

I am so excited to share our updated Master Bath today! We have a very small Master Bath so getting pictures of this space proved a bit difficult! I hope you enjoy the photos anyway!

I try to make every area in my home special, even if it is a very small space. The bathroom update was missing something special in my opinion, until I spotted a swan faucet in a historical home while browsing facebook. I quickly started researching swan faucets and found this gorgeous gold swan faucet on Amazon. She is so delicate and graceful and definitely the star of the update! I splurged on her and didn't even tell my husband before I bought her!

Lets take a peek into the the master bath. The blush pink ruffled shower curtain I have had for years and I love it! Its from Kohls and is from Lauren Conrad's bath collection.

Below is what the master bath looked like when we purchased Welch House. The sticky tiles were coming off of the floor and the shower was very odd! All I remember about the shower was that it was super small. The opening was very small and it had some kind of odd tile inside. The shower was also leaking into the foyer downstairs and had caused a large hole to form in the ceiling. My husband installed a new shower before we moved in and had to open the wall a quite a bit to get it installed.

This is the after photo. We installed ceramic tiles on the wall and floor that looks similar to marble. I love marble and one day I hope to have real marble installed in here! We did everything ourselves which made for an interesting experience as neither one of us had ever tiled anything before!

I love to mix textures so I decided to install faux tin tiles on the upper walls.

I found the french sconces at a thrift store. They add a romantic touch to the bathroom.

The Swan faucet just gets me every time I see it! The detail is amazing! My little boy says that the swan faucet makes it feel like our house is a castle now:)

I replaced the vintage sink with a new pedestal sink. I did keep the old one though, I may even reinstall it someday!

I love the look of vintage cabinets that everyone is using in their bathrooms these days. I was able to find a french corner cabinet locally, that actually fit my small space!

The top shelf holds my face creams and little trinkets.

I loved my Grandma's bathroom when I was growing up. She always had little trinkets sitting on her counter along with ornate hand mirrors and hairbrushes. She would have baskets with decorative soaps that were in shapes of angels and roses. I'm always drawn to the pretty things that my Grandma had. I was thrilled to find the "Rings and Things" trinket holder years ago, as my Grandma had the same one in her bathroom which she would store her rings in.

This is another "before" view of the master bath.

Now my french corner cabinet resides in this space. When I brought this cabinet home it was yellow from smoke and smelled really bad. I painted the inside white and then giled the outside with gold paint and finished it off with dark wax.

I am really clumsy and broke the second glass shelf, so I will have to get another made. The bottom area is perfect for folded towels.

I found this beautiful rose painting at the Goodwill store for half price! I only paid $1.50.

Its absolutely beautiful in my eyes.

I love the marble tiles on the walls.

Another thing that my Grandma had in her bathroom was an amazing vintage glam scale. I remember it was a deep pink and looked like a hand held gold mirror where the scale numbers were. I always weighed myself every time I went to her house! lol

A couple of years ago I spotted  this vintage pink scale at a junk store for $2.00. I was hesitant to purchase it because it had pink fur all over it and it was no longer pink, but matted and brown. But..... it was pink and cheap so I bought it! lol. I tore off the ugly fur and hope to find pink fur to replace it someday, but for now it looks okay to me! I wouldn't advise weighing yourself on it though, as it makes you 35lbs heavier! lol

My angel statue was actually lamp but I prefer it as a statue! It looks pretty against the leaded glass windows.

The mirror that was here before was a huge wooden medicine cabinet.

I hope you have enjoyed my updated master bath! I know this look is not for everyone, but I love it!

Updates do not happen over night in my home. We are on a budget and honesty this took a long time to complete. Sometimes I get discouraged when I compare myself to other accounts on social media who seem to complete projects in a short amount of time and money doesn't seem like a concern. Which is amazing for them, but does not reflect my current situation. I just want to make it clear that this project took a long time and I have staged my bathroom for photos. My life is not perfect, my house is not picture perfect in real life, ect... I just wanted to share this in case my readers have ever felt the same and have gotten discouraged in their own lives. I just want to encourage you to do what you can with your budget and its okay to not have a perfect staged home in your everyday life! I certainly don't:)

Thank you so much for visiting! It means so much!
